Sensor Coating Systems wins prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry Prize

The company’s novel thermal history technology will replace current industry standard thermal paints and offers very significant advantages in power generation, aero engines, in the automotive industry and in other relevant high-temperature industrial applications.

40 shortlisted entrants from all over Europe pitched their ideas to a panel of expert judges at Chemistry Means Business, a two-day event for the chemistry-using industry by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The winners were announced at an award ceremony held on 13th June as part of the same event.

Applications were judged on the degree of innovation of the technology, its potential impact, and the quality of the science behind it. Sensor Coating Systems will receive tailored business support from the competition’s multinational partner companies, as well as business training, financial mentoring, media support and a cash prize of £10,000.
Innovation requires collaboration between companies, universities and funders, and we’re excited to be able to use our networks to help with this, through our Emerging Technologies Competition. It is fantastic to be helping so many cutting-edge technologies make the leap from lab to market.
Not only does the competition provide validation for new business ideas and technologies, but it connects small companies and entrepreneurs with large companies. This is key to helping these small companies commercialise their products.
The success of the competition owes a great deal to its partners, chemistry-using multinationals who share our passion for innovation and collaboration. They provide support to our winners in a number of ways, including strategy reviews, product testing, and introducing them to new networks. The partners for 2017 are Unilever, Croda, Diageo, GE Life Sciences, AstraZeneca, Schlumberger, AkzoNobel, Johnson Matthey and Mondelez. Sensor Coating Systems Ltd. spun out of Southside Thermal Sciences (www.stscience.com) an Imperial College spin-out itself in 2012. SCS pioneers sensor technology based on luminescence materials for engineering applications in demanding environments. Its award-winning technology enables accurate temperature detection, corrosion and erosion monitoring and lifetime predictions and, in doing so, assists in optimising the operation of machinery, lowering fuel costs and maintaining material integrity.
The main industrial sectors for application are the power generation industry, aero engines, automotive and machinery operating in extreme environments such as oil & gas and petrochemical plants. SCS is internationally orientated and works with companies such as MAN Diesel & Turbo, Alstom and Snecma under collaborative agreements and also with reputed institutions such as EPRI and the German Aerospace Centre. SCS achieved international recognition after being nominated as a finalist for the Academic Enterprise Awards (ACES) 2013 in the European Parliament and also received the British Engineering Excellence Award 2013. The SCS technical team received the prestigious John P Davies Award of the International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in Düsseldorf, Germany, in June 2014.
About the Thermal History Technology
The Thermal History Technology is a unique luminescence-based sensing technology which enables engineers to record past temperatures on inaccessible components. The temperature measurement capability reaches from around 150°C to 1,400°C. This makes the technology very useful for the evaluation and design of mission-critical components in harsh environments such as a gas turbine or internal combustion engines.
The materials used in the Thermal History Technology have innate luminescence which permanently changes due to thermal exposure, allowing the temperature to be measured by non-destructive excitation and detection of the luminescence light. The measurement device can be scanned across the surface to produce an accurate thermal profile of the surface. The materials are deposited using techniques pioneered for the most challenging applications and can survive for a long duration under high thermal and mechanical loads, offering both short- and long-term measurement of thermal characteristics.
